CUNY Professor Describes Being Shackled While Giving Birth

A recent ACLU blog post quotes powerful testimony delivered to the UN Committee this week:

Tina Reynolds described the substandard medical care she received in prison during her pregnancy and the inhumane treatment she was subjected to during childbirth: “I gave birth to my son while I was in prison, shackled to the gurney during childbirth with an officer who didn’t even know my name observing the arrival of my son.”

U.S. Women of Color Demand Our Human Rights

Representatives from U.S. non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the Transgender, Gender Variant & Intersex Justice Project, WILD for Human Rights and Justice Now, will travel to Geneva, Switzerland on February 21 and 22 to monitor the proceedings of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) as the U.S. State Department and the Department of Justice defend the Bush Administration’s human rights record. The CERD committee will examine U.S. compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). As an international treaty ratified by the U.S., the ICERD has the force of law in the United States.
